What is QuickStart Tennis? PDF  | Print |  E-mail

qs QuickStart tennis is currently being used for Clinics, Lessons, Junior Teams and Tournaments. Q uickStart tennis has recently been launched by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). It is an innovative approach to teaching tennis to children who are under ten years of age.

When learning on an adult size court, it is easy for younger kids to become frustrated and lose interest in tennis. However, with new restrictions, kids are able to learn faster and feel more comfortable on the court.  Regarding the format, the sizes of the courts are smaller and the restrictions on the racquets are no more than 23” in size. The balls, either foam or low compression, do not bounce as high or as far as a standard tennis ball, which also makes the game easier to learn for these smaller children. All of the new regulations are smaller, allowing for more comfort and success while learning the game of tennis.

With smaller courts, the ball lands in the child’s strike zone allowing for the ability to work on their footwork and technique. In addition, there are many more benefits that come along with this new format of teaching tennis, which include most importantly, the fast progression and retention of junior tennis players.

This particular video portrays Martina Navratilova and Mary Joe Fernandez playing on an enlarged court in order to give us a “kids-eye view” on what it is like to play tennis at that age. It is interesting to see what they have to say about QuickStart and watch them play as though they are in kids’ shoes. QuickStart tennis is an exciting way to bring kids to tennis and hopefully keep them playing!
