Featured Academy - Coosa International Tennis Academy (CITA) PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Join as we take a journey to Rome, Georgia to learn more about the Coosa International Tennis Academy (CITA). The academy was created with the goal of becoming the number one tennis and educational academy in the country by giving each junior an opportunity to become the very best person, student, and tennis player.

CITA has only been open since 2005, but they are on the fast track to achieving their goal. One of the reasons that CITA has been successful is Director and Founder, Freddie Rodriguez. As any good leader does, Rodriguez has surrounded himself with other top tennis coaches in the industry. He is joined by General Manager, Juan Pablo Selle and Elite High Performance Coach, Jhonny Berrido. Both Berrido and Rodriguez are from the Dominican Republic while Selle is from Chile. All three coaches were great Junior and College players. These coaches all come from different backgrounds and thus are able to provide different instructional techniques that allow them to connect with their students on numerous levels. These coaches have made a conscious decision to give all of their students the best opportunity to succeed in both tennis and in life. The staff is rounded out by a full time sports psychologist and physical trainer. The staff at CITA strives to combine tennis coaching methods from all over the world to build a well-rounded player.

CITA is one of the few academies in the United States that offers high performance training and the quality education of a private school CITA sets itself apart from the average tennis academy in many different ways. One of its most unique features is their partnership with Darlington School, a PK-12 private school that offers boarding to all of the academy students. Darlington School boasts a 100% college placement for all its graduates. The tie in with Darlington School allows players to focus equally on both tennis and school. Another great feature of CITA is their decision to focus on quality of players rather than quantity of players. The academy currently has 21 players enrolled. This choice to have a smaller academy allows for more personalized instruction and relationship building. "CITA is one of the few academies in the United States that offers high performance training and the quality education of a private school," says Rodriguez, "This uniqueness has allowed CITA to bring players from all around the world."

Live for Tennis, Prepare for LifeEach day at CITA starts off with a mix of tennis and cross training followed by a healthy breakfast. In the middle of the day the students go to classes at Darlington School. After classes, the students head back to the courts for more tennis training. In the evening the focus goes to physical and mental conditioning. One hour every night, an optional study hall is offered. Several times a month Dartfish (a video recording of the student's stroke) is used to analyze the player's game, footwork and technique. Having a smaller academy allows for individualized workouts, and analysis based on the students' schedule. Rodriguez says, "The staff at CITA wants to develop players that enjoy and excel at the game even if they do not choose to play at the next level." This way they have a sport that they can enjoy for a lifetime. The staff and students at CITA work and train under the motto "Live for Tennis, Prepare for Life."
